Apr 24 2009

That was a very volatile day, what with "stress test" news et all. Made out OK by staying away during hectic jumps up and down and making our main trades in more readble times. WFC, JNPR, QLD etc worked fine for us on a long side.

Session Time: Fri Apr 24 00:00:00 2009

[10:39] {vint} thanks
[10:40] {Threei}  come on JNPR
[10:40] {Threei}  relieve me of last 1/4
[10:43] {Threei}  ah come on... 1 cent shy?
[10:43] {nemo} greedy...
[10:45] {Threei}  market lost will to live
[10:46] {vint} Friday syndrome?
[10:46] {Threei}  yeah
[10:46] {Threei}  plus tose stress test details published at 2
[10:46] {Threei}  plus nearing resistance from a few days ago
[10:47] {Threei}  so gotta decide what to do, break out and run or wilt and die
[10:47] {vint} looks like last hr could be interesting
[10:47] {vint} i mean after lunch
[10:47] {Threei}  wide consensus in investing community is pullback is coming
[10:47] {magoo} so..no pullback
[10:47] {Threei}  you know how I feel about wide consensuses
[10:48] {magoo} :)
[10:48] {magoo} stole your punchline
[10:48] {Threei}  if you want surefire way to be mistaken, side with "widely acknowledged"...
[10:49] {Threei}  (that's why I don't believe in gravity btw)
[10:49] {vint} :)
[10:49] {wulff} ealier you said .50 break on JNPR that did not work.
[10:49] {Threei}  it never set up
[10:49] {wulff} it hit .50 but did not break it, so
[10:50] {Threei}  it got invalidated by dropping under support
[10:50] {wulff} so I would have bought it at  say .52
[10:50] {Threei}  no... that's not how it works
[10:51] {wulff} it traded at .50 so I bought it, then took a stop
[10:51] {Threei}  gimme a sec, I'll get to it
[10:51] {wulff} Ty
[10:51] {Threei}  ok, out last portion .76
[10:51] {Threei}  {JNPR} there... happy now? leave me alone now, you want just one thing from me
[10:52] {Threei}  original setup was .50 break if holding above .35
[10:52] {Threei}  .50 never got broken, JNPR went under .35,
[10:52] {Threei}  setup got invalidated.
[10:52] {Threei}  Next event was:
[10:52] {Threei}  it jumped up and broke .50
[10:52] {jfjf64} next
[10:52] {Threei}  no entry in such cases,
[10:53] {Threei}  because:
[10:53] {jfjf64} correct
[10:53] {Threei}  1. support got broken, you have way too wide range to buy a break
[10:53] {Threei}  2. it went into resistance b=vertically
[10:53] {Threei}  and vertical move leads to exhaustion
[10:53] {Threei}  we buy breaks after consolidations, not after a sharp spike into resistance
[10:54] {wulff} but what would I have bought it at the first time
[10:54] {wulff} if it broke
[10:54] {Threei}  it never set up first time
[10:54] {wulff} if...
[10:54] {Threei}  if it broke, you'de have bought it just above .50
[10:54] {wulff} OK
[10:54] {Threei}  with stop under .35
[10:55] {wulff} tricky when it trades to resistance number and falls
[10:55] {nemo} c'mon Juniper give yourself over to the Vader
[10:55] {Threei}  nemo... wake up
[10:55] {Threei}  we already settled our differencies
[10:55] {nemo} oh, shut off the speakers
[10:55] {Threei}  [10:51] {Threei} ok, out last portion .76
[10:55] {Threei}  [10:51] {Threei} {JNPR} there... happy now? leave me alone now, you want just one thing from me
[10:55] {jfjf64} i never got in trade   what  bout  me
[10:55] {jfjf64} lol
[10:56] {dptl} wfc?
[10:56] {nemo} what about you jf?  You think this is about you?  Want to be the center of attention?  :) Too much caffeine...sorry
[10:56] {nemo} yea WFC had that higher low...bummer

[11:31] {nemo} FAS
[11:31] {Threei}  so, the idea of the trade, briefly:
[11:31] {ese} ahhhhhh tks....i needed that
[11:31] {Threei}  I wanted to play NADAQ breakout,
[11:32] {Threei}  I didn't see particular stock to follow
[11:32] {Threei}  and didn't want to tie myself to whims of particular stock,
[11:32] {Threei}  and QQQQ is a bit too thick and immobile
[11:32] {nemo} bout time for WFC to take the elevator down
[11:32] {Threei}  so QLD is better fit
[11:32] {Threei}  now,
[11:32] {Threei}  look at it's intraday chart
[11:32] {Threei}  asit makes new highs,
[11:33] {Threei}  would you call ijt breakout stock or pullback stock?
[11:33] {nemo} break out on the JBE
[11:33] {Threei}  most of its movements were very effective off pullbacks
[11:33] {Threei}  breaks were so so
[11:33] {Threei}  so... as it touched .80, I waited for pullback
[11:34] {Threei}  .60 was the low of the range
[11:34] {Threei}  entry in .64-.68 range was as perfect preparation for breakout as it gets
[11:34] {Threei}  there... a little theory
[11:34] {Threei}  be back in 20
[11:35] {vint} was it a brakout from yesterday high?

[11:47] {wulff} Pat my own back...but I bought a half lot of WFC at 20.10 on the pullback
[11:48] {nemo} you should cash out and go home for the day
[11:48] {magoo} careful

[12:12] {Threei}  oops
[12:13] {Threei}  and... as much as I can appreciate the sheer scale of pressure Lewis must have felt himself under if Paulson and Co did what he says they did,
[12:13] {Threei}  if he caved in, he is as guilty as they are
[12:14] {nemo} yeah, not like he didn't have enough money for 10 retirements

[12:43] {dptl} stay in coma
[12:44] {Threei}  sigh... never mind
[12:44] {nemo} FAS at new high or nominal volume?
[12:44] {vint} interestingly,FAS and FAZ almost in same price level
[12:44] {Threei}  yeah, they will eclipse soon again I'd assume
[12:46] {nemo} lack of volume...no commitment beyond money that's been playing all along?
[12:47] {vinod} most of the company lost money but Beats Forecast
[12:47] {Threei}  if it was locked in the same money turning over, we would have price locked in the range
[12:48] {Threei}  I think most of commentators citing lack of volume as a premise for this rally to fizzle out don't get it
[12:48] {Threei}  the only thing it tells us really is:
[12:48] {Threei}  the part of the rally we have seen so far is mostly smart money
[12:49] {Threei}  crowd hasn't joined yet
[12:49] {Threei}  when it does - that's when we are going to see major volume
[12:49] {Threei}  and that is going to take us into exhaustion climatic movement
[12:49] {Threei}  climactic
[12:50] {nemo} going green are you Vad?
[12:50] {wulff} fine by me. I can wait

[13:30] {Threei}  unless they changed their minds again
[13:30] {Threei}  sorry, May 4
[13:30] {vint} got it ,thanks
[13:30] {Threei}  assumption is, methodology will give clues to how test results will look

[14:36] {Threei}  what an incredible mess
[14:36] {Threei}  my take:
[14:36] {Threei}  This is meaningless blather. Those are meaningless tests. Anyone can make anything out of this text, and test results themselves will be just as meaningless.
[14:36] {Threei}  There is some framework within which they constructed those tests and their interpretations. That framework is purely abstract and arbitrary - another set of people would construct it differently.
[14:36] {Threei}  It means that after initial hoopla dies down and dust settles, it all won't matter a bit. All those tests are colossal waste of time and effort and public focus.
[14:37] {nemo} [13:55] {nemo} these things have got to be marketing pieces

[14:51] {Threei}  7.80 in, 7.95 out?
[14:52] {Threei}  would it even cover losses of first two stops?
[14:52] {Threei}  that's how those tempting big red candles kill you
[14:52] {Threei}  entry is clear only in rear window
[14:53] {vint} this happens in opening also
[14:53] {vint} first few minutes
[14:54] {Threei}  that's why I sually skip them and wait for the opening range to establish itself
[14:54] {Threei}  then go for break of it
[14:54] {larisa} whats sually ?
[14:54] {vint} so announcement like this is like opening moments..crowd emotion
[14:54] {wulff} i.e. FITB
[14:54] {nemo} nice larisa
[14:55] {larisa} vadism :)
[14:55] {Threei}  larisa... "sually" is usually typed with my exceptional typing skills
[14:55] {larisa} i know
[14:55] {Threei}  and you, with multiyears of reading Threeish, should really know better
[14:56] {Threei}  eqzaktly vint
[14:56] {Threei}  it's a common phrase: trade big news events as opening
[14:57] {vint} how insightful! wish i knew it before..slow learner
[14:57] {Threei}  usually applied to FOMC rate decisions
[15:01] {wulff} you think FAS breaks high or low?
[15:01] {wulff} can't decide
[15:01] {Threei}  price configuration says high
[15:01] {Threei}  volume says wait a minute
[15:01] {Threei}  it's a toss
[15:02] {nemo} It's Friday
[15:02] {wulff} throw something
[15:02] {Threei}  I still have inclination toward high
[15:02] {Threei}  buit that's my general bias talking
[15:03] {Threei}  I've been bullish for what now, 3 weeks?
[15:03] {Threei}  and this last one everyone else was bearish
[15:03] {Threei}  I think I was the lone bull
[15:03] {Threei}  no cow in sight
[15:04] {dptl} lol
[15:04] {Threei}  remember those big red days
[15:04] {Threei}  when I was saying it's just a pullback before resumption?
[15:04] {Threei}  every single time that was what happened
[15:05] {Threei}  so, it's kind of hard for me to change out.,ook,
[15:05] {Threei}  as a trend following trader I stay with trend direction until it's proven to break
[15:05] {Threei}  so far it's not
[15:06] {vint} nyse advancing issues up 30% but volume dn 10% ..hope i'm reading correctly
[15:06] {vint} no clue..those are the reading from my screens
[15:07] {wulff} WFC approaching 22
[15:07] {Threei}  why wouldn't it... everyone is trying to short it
[15:08] {wulff} and why would they...the news is out months ago
[15:09] {Threei}  instinct... short anything that isd "too high"... buy anything that is "too low"
[15:09] {Threei}  get killed
[15:09] {Threei}  repeat
[15:09] {Threei}  get killed again
[15:09] {Threei}  repeat
[15:09] {Threei}  'cause if you don't, how I, trend following trader will make my living
[15:10] {vint} so high is not high or low is not real low until it is proven so
[15:12] {Threei}  IMF OFFICIAL: LATIN AMERICAN ECONOMIES REACHING BOTTOM
[15:12] {Threei}  unless they keep digging
[15:13] {Threei}  well, there is a difference between high and The high
[15:13] {Threei}  if stocks didn't make new highs, where would trends come from?
[15:13] {Threei}  and if they do, what business does one have shorting each new high?
[15:14] {magoo} btw..everyday laserdave asks me what i think..everyday for 6 weeks i reply "UP"
[15:14] {magoo} so u not alone..im the cow he he
[15:14] {Threei}  ummm
[15:14] {nemo} I thought you were the horse's...
[15:14] {Threei}  may I think of you as another bull?
[15:15] {vint} i thought we had only bulls bears and pigs
[15:15] {vint} cow, horse??
[15:15] {nemo} trans-bull vint
[15:15] {Threei}  we are broadening our limits
[15:16] {Threei}  and trying to be inclusive
[15:16] {vint} any set up to watch vad?
[15:16] {magoo} ravens
[15:16] {Threei}  this pullback on WFC into .50 was tempting...
[15:16] {Threei}  I hesitated
[15:17] {Threei}  too big chance to get hurt on these hectic moves
[15:17] {vint} even FAS seemd so to me
[15:17] {Threei}  a lot of repositioning happens ahead of weekend
[15:21] {Threei}  watch WFC for double bottom
[15:21] {magoo} see, this mkt will NOT let anyone in
